François Dessemontet – Cut and Paste: PLagiarism and Self-Plagiarism at the Crossroad of Copyright and Ethics
University of Lausanne (Suíça)
CUT & PASTE FAVOURS BOTH PLAGIARISM AND SELF-PLAGIARISM IN ACADEMIC PAPERS OF ALL KINDS. PLAGIARISM IS CONTRARY TO COPYRIGHT, EXCEPT WHERE THE RIGHT OF CITATION APPLIES. SELF-PLAGIARISM IS NOT CONTRARY TO COPYRIGHT, BUT MAY RUN COUNTER TO CONTRACTUAL ARRANGEMENTS BETWEEN THE AUTHOR AND THE FIRST PUBLISHER. FURTHER, SELF-PLAGIARISM IS OFTEN CONTRARY TO ETHICS AND FAIR PRACTICES IN ACADEMIC LIFE, AND MIGHT EVEN GIVE RISE TO AN ACTION UNDER UNFAIR COMPETITION LAWS.
